American Gothic
by Grant Wood (1891-1942)
This very famous painting, depicting a farmer and his daughter, is hung in the hall of the castle, on the left of the clock-coffin that is opened by Riff at the beginning of the Time Warp...
In the movie, there are two references to the painting:
During Ralph and Betty's wedding, we can see Riff Raff and Magenta standing before the Denton church, dressed the same way, and holding a pitchfork just like the two characters of the painting.
At the end, Riff Raff bursts into the room, holding a Space Gun, which is the same shape as the pitchfork the farmer holds. So next week, when you'll be asked what is Riff holding in his right hand, you will know it's not a "laser capable of emitting a beam of pure anti-matter" as Dr Scott says, it's a pitchfork... but a pitchfork capable of emetting a beam fo pure anti-matter!!!!
